BEYOND EARTH HOUR CHALLENGE

The ‘Beyond Earth Hour Challenge’ is a environmental initiative for 21 Sydney Region High Schools, designed to encourage good practice in ecological sustainability - a 2009 - 2011 priority for Sydney Region.
The aim of the challenge is to encourage the entire school community to reduce their wastage of electricity.

The Challenge takes place over a four-week period in Term 3. The project will start Monday 1st September.
During this week Energy Australia will be monitoring schools (prior permission has been granted for this by the school principal) and providing the Centre with electricity consumption data.

This first week will be a benchmark indicator of consumption for the whole school. The student team will drive the campaign to reduce electricity consumption over the next 3 school weeks and the first week of the school holidays (to encourage a holiday shutdown plan).

The Challenge

• encourages and rewards student leadership and team building
• strengthens a culture of sustainability across the school
• focuses on student-driven capacity-building in reducing the school’s ecological footprint
• reduces expenditure on utilities, allowing a reallocation of school funds to other areas
• portrays a school image of environmental responsibility within the local community
• contributes to current government campaigns in the areas of sustainable resource management

2008 Conference Theme:'Climate Change - The Power Shift'

Workshops focussed on student led initiatives to increase energy efficiency to reduce the school's carbon footprint.

Following on from the conference, schools are invited to take part in an environmental challenge activity. The school achieving the greatest reduction in their electricity consumption will win the challenge.
As part of the Energy Efficiency project, each team will be able to access their school's daily energy consumption data. This data is available on a website from Energy Australia at www.webgraphs.com.au.
Further information can be found in the following pdf document.

Please note that only a limited number of reports will be available to participating schools.
